Wanderlust: Istanbul

It's almost three years since Will took me to Istanbul. I can't believe it! What an amazing city - I think about it all the time. I'm not sure when we'll get back there but looking at the photos does help to soothe my itchy feet. (At the time, we told our nephews that we'd visit again with them in ten years, in 2020 when one will be celebrating his 21st birthday, and the other his 18th. That still sounds like fun to me.) How about you: where would you like to re-visit?
...PS I'm now on Twitter and Instagram, if you'd like to connect!

koala hospital

Earlier this week Will and I visited the Koala Hospital in Port Macquarie. The Hospital rescues 200-250 injured and orphaned koalas annually. We were too early for the 3pm tour hosted daily by one of the volunteers, but it was lovely to see the adorable little things doing so well (or, rather, sleeping so soundly!) after experiencing trauma, such as a motor vehicle accident or a dog attack. Click here to see some of the cutest furry faces you have ever seen! It costs $50 to adopt a koala for one year.

happy new year

After two weeks off, today I got back to exercising. It felt like I was pulling behind me the trailer load of food I've eaten in that time. Thanks so much for your support in 2011. Here's to a happy and fruitful 2012!

family photo shoots: melbourne 2011

I'm planning a trip to Melbourne in August/September for a week or so of family photo shoots. If you or someone you know would like to reserve a day, drop me a line! Gift certificates are also available, and they made great gifts for new parents, father's day, etc. Take a look at my website for more information. Bookings are essential.

reflection

This photograph was taken at sunset on one of the beautiful beaches of the mid-north coast, NSW, Australia. I love the reflection of the light and clouds on the ripples of water and the dreamy, relaxing colours. It's now available in my Etsy shop

for you

My little gift to you for May is one more small copy of Forty Kegs at the Apollo (approx. 5x6.25" in size). I'll be delighted to post it to the first person to email me who hasn't won before. It doesn't matter whether you live in Australia or abroad, just don't be shy and don't forget your postal address!

the end of an era

Every Oprah fan knows that these last few days have brought TOWS to an end after twenty-five years on air. The final episode airs this evening in Australia. In the winter of 2009, my friends and I sat in our tiny London lounge room and called the ticket line in Chicago non-stop for almost an hour. This wasn't the first time - we had been trying to get tickets for over ten years (like so many others!) - but it was our lucky day. The four of us went on to see two shows in Chicago and then spend up big in The Oprah Store. Mel and I used to watch Oprah together while we were studying at university in Australia: We'd take off one hour every afternoon to watch TOWS, become enlightened and eat a packet of chocolate biscuitsTo visit Chicago and see Oprah, together, was one of the most special experiences of our lives. Will took this lovely photograph of Mel and I sitting on 'Oprah's chair' that was on display in the store. If you would like to personally thank Super-O for all the years of love and inspiration, you can sign the guest-book or send her an email

the mountain

Remember Norwegian photographer Terje Sorgjerd's long-exposure photographs of the Aurora that he shot in Russia? Well, here's another beautiful video of his: The Milky Way and El Teide mountains, both shot in Spain.

New in the shop is my collection of four Camden Doors photographs. Each one is 4x4" and full of milk bar colour. Have you visited them in North London?

st. loo avenue

One of my favourite London street sign photographs is now available in my Etsy shop: St. Loo Avenue taken in October 2010 on what was a perfect autumn day in Chelsea, SW3. I love the dappled sunlight in the trees, on the brick-work and charming old street sign.

happy australia day

On a mini-holiday to join family at beautiful Port Macquarie over the last few days, I was visiting my friend Bethmay and, while I was gone, Will and my nephews found this little fellow relaxing in the gum trees.
Then we found him (or one of his friends) again this morning, flat out celebrating Australia Day in typical Koala fashion!

jay b sauceda

US-based photographer Jay B Sauceda's work is rad. I couldn't resist his Sign Painters series of prints from Public School. I love old signs and also the idea of preserving and appreciating them, at the very least in print, before they're gone. I can't wait for them to arrive!
